Initial situation

A new start as an opportunity for innovation

BOMAG, a leading global manufacturer of compaction technology machines, was seeking a future-oriented telematics solution. Initially, the focus was on optimizing service through real-time diagnostics. However, during the discussions, it quickly became clear that the existing solution no longer met the requirements in other areas either. A key problem was the lack of AEMP 2.0 compliance, which was required for standardized and efficient machine data communication. During the project, this requirement was also extended to MiC 4.0 compliance to meet future industry standards.

Instead of a pure service solution, a comprehensive fleet management platform was needed, with a central dashboard that processes all relevant machine data and makes it easily accessible to customers. As the previous provider was unable to meet these requirements, BOMAG decided to make a change – and opted for modern fleet management for its end customers with our solution.

The challenge

Focus on uniformity and global compliance

BOMAG's requirements were demanding and time-critical. A cost-effective solution was to be implemented within a short period of time to provide a better portal for customers. However, the project had two main challenges:

1. Integrating existing machine data into the new platform: In addition to the new machines that were to be equipped with the Proemion telematics solution, over 7,000 machines already in use with the previous telematics solution had to be integrated into the new system, and all without any loss of information. The aim was to create a seamless, uniform platform.

2. Global compliance: BOMAG exports worldwide and pursues an uncompromising goal: 100% compliance. This meant that the TCU (Telematics Control Unit) not only had to be adapted to the different machines but also had to cover all country certifications for BOMAG's export markets. In addition, global 4G coverage played a crucial role: the solution not only had to be certified but also reliable in every country to ensure seamless connectivity and data transmission - regardless of where the machines were used.

Solution

Future-proof investment with scalable potential

BOMAG decided to switch to Proemion as a first step to optimize its fleet management, with the clear prospect of successively expanding the solution to include further use cases. The decision was made in favor of a modern, future-proof telematics solution that can be flexibly adapted to new requirements.

  • Gradual and independent further development: The new solution provides BOMAG with full control to activate specific functions and develop them independently, from efficient fleet management to advanced analysis and automation.
  • State-of-the-art technology: By investing in a modern platform, BOMAG was able to easily meet the requirements of MiC 4.0 and position itself optimally for future developments.
  • Ongoing global certification and cybersecurity compliance: To ensure that the solution can be used worldwide, the required country certifications are continuously expanded. At the same time, the solution adapts to current cybersecurity requirements. This includes compliance with the RED Directive, preparation for the EU Cyber Resilience Act, and conformity with UN R155 and other international security standards. This ongoing process not only ensures coverage of every new market but also a high level of security and future viability.

With this scalable and future-oriented telematics solution, BOMAG secures a long-term innovative edge and maximum flexibility.

Result

Standardized fleet management and future potential

The introduction of the new solution was a complete success.  By equipping new machines with the Proemion TCU (CANlink® mobile) and importing the data from existing machines (including via the AEMP API), BOMAG was able to use both the latest machines and those already in use in the modern DataPlatform and DataPortal. Today, over 11,400 active BOMAG machines are already networked worldwide. In combination with the Machine Companion App, BOMAG customers now have a standardized, powerful, and user-friendly solution for their fleet management.

But this is just the beginning. Thanks to the flexible architecture of the Proemion solution, BOMAG now has the opportunity to activate further features of the Global Telematics Solution gradually. Extended functions such as firmware-over-the-air updates (FOTA) and maintenance tools are already being planned to elevate service to a new level worldwide. BOMAG also makes intensive use of ProInsights to evaluate machine data and drive continuous product improvement.

Another essential component is the extensive use of the Proemion API, which BOMAG uses not only to manage its solution but also to integrate external services. In addition, the introduction of single sign-on (SSO) ensures secure and convenient user authentication.

With the new solution, BOMAG has not only addressed short-term challenges but has also laid the groundwork for a future-proof, scalable, and innovative telematics strategy. A key aspect of this strategy is the certification of Proemion telematics hardware in over 110 countries, which enables global approval and facilitates seamless implementation on a worldwide scale.

With Proemion, we have a reliable and flexible partner at our side who supports us in expanding our digital strategy in the long term. Thanks to the scalable telematics solutions, we can develop solutions together with our customers and efficiently network our machines.
